About 65 trees in Central Park that are infested with polyphagous shot hole borers are being removed because the beetles can weaken a tree and cause limbs to fall.

Struggle to save endangered Santa Ana sucker may reach U.S. Supreme Court

A 20-year struggle to protect a rare bottom-feeding fish from extinction appears headed toward resolution as Inland Empire cities and water agencies are asking the court of last resort to intervene.

Two cities and 10 water agencies say they will petition the U.S. Supreme Court to halt a plan to try to save the Santa Ana sucker that involves designating critical habitat that could restrict water uses on the Santa Ana River.

The governments argue that the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's plan, upheld last month by the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals, unfairly imposes restrictions on water conservation, groundwater recharge and flood control operations that affect more than 1 million Southern California residents.

Irvine will display U.S. motto at City Hall

Following the lead of several cities in Orange County and hundreds around the country, Irvine will display the national motto "In God We Trust" in a yet-to-be-determined area of City Hall.

In addition, the City Council voted last week to include the Latin phrase "E Pluribus Unum" — "Out of Many, One" — in a display at the facility.

"It is a bit belated in our city while many other cities in the country picked up on this," Mayor Steven Choi said in raising the agenda item before the council. Councilwoman Lynn Schott added in an amended motion the push for "E Pluribus Unum," a phrase displayed on the Great Seal of the United States.

Newport Beach backs diversity after official's same-sex marriage email

After more than two hours of discussion about a councilman's recent statements regarding same-sex marriage, the Newport Beach City Council this week approved a resolution reaffirming the city's support for diversity, equality and inclusiveness.

Dozens of speakers, including residents and members of the LGBT community, criticized Councilman Scott Peotter for his July 6 email blast to constituents, which took issue with the illumination of the White House in rainbow hues after the Supreme Court's ruling legalizing same-sex marriage.

Fullerton agrees to voting districts in settling lawsuit

Fullerton officials have settled a lawsuit alleging that the city's at-large elections violate California's Voting Rights Act, agreeing to create a district-based system that would then need voters' approval.

The suit, brought in March by Asian Americans Advancing Justice-Los Angeles and the ACLU of Southern California on behalf of resident Jonathan Paik, argued that at-large voting prevented Fullerton's minority populations from electing their preferred candidates.

The city has a population of 139,000, 23% of whom are Asian American and 35% are Latino, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

Dalai Lama's 80th birthday celebration draws 18,000 to Anaheim

Words failed Yangchen Dolkar as she tried to explain why it was so important for her to bring her three young children Sunday to see the 14th Dalai Lama speak in Anaheim.

A Tibetan who grew up in exile in India and now works as a physician in San Francisco, she views the charismatic monk as greater than any sage or leader.

"He's much more than what I can explain. He's like God to us. It's hard for them to fathom what I mean," said Dolkar, pointing to her three children — all named Tenzin after the Dalai Lama's own name, Tenzin Gyatso — as they giggled at her feet. "If they see him and hear his wisdom ... it's an important part of being a Tibetan."

Bishop's pending sale of O.C. church leaves congregation locked out

Though St. James the Great Episcopal Church parishioners won't be meeting in their longtime house of worship Sunday, it doesn't mean they won't be having a service.

The group, led by the Rev. Canon Cindy Evans Voorhees, plans to have its usual Sunday service on the sidewalk outside the 70-year-old Newport Beach church.

On Thursday morning, about 50 parishioners stood in front of the locked white gates barring them from entering the building. They were there to show support for their congregation and voice opposition to Bishop J. Jon Bruno's plan to sell the property to a developer.

Dolphin leaps on boat, lands on O.C. woman's ankles, breaking them

Not every dolphin encounter is as happy as those with Flipper. Laguna Nigel resident Chrissie Frickman has two broken ankles to prove it.

Frickman was injured last month when a 750- to 1,000-pound dolphin hopped onto her boat and landed on her ankles. And just like that, Frickman was rendered immobile.

She and her family were understandably rattled.

“That dolphin could have crushed my kids so I am glad it was me, but we are all completely traumatized,” she wrote on Facebook.
