Federal grand jury now probing alleged courthouse tampering in O.C.

A federal grand jury will begin hearing testimony next month from dozens of people who allegedly paid to have drunk driving and other traffic-related violations "fixed" by a clerk.

The grand jury hearings are part of a probe by an Orange County corruption task force into nearly six years of alleged case tampering in the county courthouses.

Authorities believe a former clerk altered the minutes of 1,058 cases from October 2009 to March 2015. The clerk entered fake pleas and reduced penalties for defendants, who had paid thousands of dollars to have their cases cleansed, authorities said.

FBI agents have issued dozens of subpoenas in the most serious cases, mostly DUI convictions. The subpoenas order people to appear before a grand jury on July 8 or July 29, according to defendants and sources familiar with the probe.

Orange County's deadliest air disaster occurred 50 years ago this month

The deadliest air disaster in Orange County history occurred 50 years ago this month.

In the early morning of June 25, 1965, an Air Force C-135 Stratolifter with 72 Marines and 12 crew members took off from El Toro Marine Corps Air Station and crashed into a nearby mountain.

Here's a retrospective from The Times' reporting:
Death was instantaneous for all aboard as the huge jet disintegrated in flames on a grass-covered hillside a mile wide.

O.C. college district foundation closer to OKing Saudi consulting deal

An Orange County college district foundation Tuesday moved closer to approving a controversial consulting contract worth an estimated $85 million to help run two technical schools in Saudi Arabia.

The proposed deal has been criticized by faculty members and others who say that it was brokered in near secrecy and who questioned doing business with an absolute monarchy with a spotty human rights record.

During a board meeting Tuesday afternoon in Santa Ana, the Rancho Santiago Community College District Foundation directed attorneys to return with a final draft of the contract for final approval, which officials say could happen within 30 days.

Orange County family waits for federal ruling on same-sex marriage

Here in the suburbs, Matthew, John and their two children are just another nuclear family cozied up in front of the TV on a Saturday night.

Their single-story house sits on a quiet residential street in Placentia, a small slice of northern Orange County where some of the street signs are decorated with patriotic symbols and the motto is an inviting, "A pleasant place to live."

Tonight is movie night — the family's favorite shared Saturday activity. It's 8-year-old Wyatt's turn to pick, and he decides on "ParaNorman," an animated comedy about a boy's quest to end a curse on a town where a tribunal years before had declared a little girl a witch.

As it slows, firefighters' focus in 13,000-acre blaze in San Bernardino Mountains turns to prevention

The 13,000-acre Lake fire that began in the Barton Flats area burned to the east Friday but didn’t grow as rapidly, allowing firefighters to take preventive measures along Highway 38 to the north.

Had it advanced across the 38, it would have gone “straight toward Big Bear and there’s nothing to stop it,” said Jay Enns, a U.S. Forest Service division chief.

Hard work from water-dropping helicopters and hand crews on the ground stopped that scenario from happening.

In the past, lifeguards have surveyed the water while riding a jet ski. That process usually takes about two hours.

The drone can get it done in 20 minutes.

At last, California Coastal Commission says Newport Beach may keep its fire rings

It's taken a few years, but it finally looks as if Newport Beach will get to keep its beachfront fire rings.

The California Coastal Commission on Thursday gave the city permission to reconfigure 64 fire rings, allowing half of them to burn wood and the other half to burn charcoal.

The vote ended about two years of debate among Newport Beach residents, city leaders and other government agencies over the placement and number of the rings.

"It's a big weight off our shoulders," Newport Beach Mayor Edward Selich said. "The whole situation hasn't been good for the dynamics of our city."

At community forum, police excessive force a concern

ORANGE COUNTY -- Orlando Police Chief John Mina openly admits over the past 18 months, there’s been five excessive force cases investigated in his department. That includes the most recent case last week that centers around a video which appears to show an Orlando Police officer repeatedly kicking a suspect.

“I will tell you, there’s a lot more to the whole incident than just that short video but that’s why we’re investigating it. That’s why we’ve given it to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. No one is sitting up here condoning those actions, that’s why we do an investigation," Chief Mina explained.

Sanford Police Chief Cecil Smith took over his department after 17-year-old Trayvon Martin was shot and killed in 2012.

"It's just beyond my words. I'm just over the moon," his daughter San Clemente resident Karen Richardson said.

Kalief Browder, jailed for 3 years in N.Y. without a trial, commits suicide

Kalief Browder, whose three years in jail without trial inspired calls for reform in New York, has committed suicide at age 22, his attorney said Sunday.

Browder was 16 when he was arrested on suspicion of stealing a backpack, and he spent about two years in solitary confinement. He died at home in the Bronx on Saturday, attorney Paul V. Prestia told the Los Angeles Times.

“I think what caused the suicide was his incarceration and those hundreds and hundreds of nights in solitary confinement, where there were mice crawling up his sheets in that little cell,” Prestia said in a phone interview Sunday evening. “Being starved, and not being taken to the shower for two weeks at a time … those were direct contributing factors.… That was the pain and sadness that he had to deal with every day, and I think it was too much for him.”

Israeli warplanes bomb Gaza after rocket attack from enclave

Israeli warplanes struck three training facilities in the Gaza Strip early Thursday after rockets were fired into Israel from the coastal enclave, witnesses and security officials said.

An Israeli jet fired a missile into a section of northwest Gaza City, residents in the area said, while explosions were also reported elsewhere in the strip. Fire brigades and ambulances rushed to the targeted areas, but no casualties were immediately reported.

Police and security forces in the coastal area, which is ruled by the Islamic militant group Hamas, had evacuated buildings and security headquarters in anticipation of an Israeli attack after the rocket fire.

State high court upholds death sentence for Orange County killer

The California Supreme Court unanimously upheld the death sentence Monday of an Orange County man convicted of murdering his parents and brother.

In a decision written by Justice Kathryn Mickle Werdegar, the court rejected an appeal by Edward Charles III, convicted of killing his father, Edward Charles II, his mother, Dolores Charles, and his 19-year-old younger brother, Daniel Charles, a USC student, in 1994 at the family’s Sunny Hills home in Fullerton.

The defendant, a 22-year-old college dropout working as a mechanic at the time of the killings, maintained at his trial that he had no motive for the murders and lacked the poor character required to have committed them.

Orange County animal shelter in 'utter disrepair,' grand jury report says

The 74-year-old Orange County animal shelter has fallen into "utter disrepair," creating health risks to both humans and critters, according to a new grand jury report.

The main structure, built with unreinforced brick and surrounded by "piecemeal placements of sheds, gazebos, lean-tos, trailers," and other portable units may not survive earthquakes, the report found.

When the facility first opened during World War II, it was intended to serve about 200,000 residents. But today, with 18 contract cities also depending on the county for animal care services, the coverage area includes roughly 2.1 million people, more than 10 times the original target.
